Introducing Loka Journal Volume One
Loka has always been about creativity, expression and the art of making beautiful things - so creating a magazine felt like a natural extension of who we are. Volume One brings these ideas together in print, celebrating our cultures, our communities and the ways we live.
Inside, you’ll find essays, images, memories and recipes - a mix of cultural exploration and contemporary design, shaped by artists, writers, musicians and makers from across the South Asian diaspora. Think: heritage meeting new perspectives; familiar stories told with fresh eyes.
There’s something grounding about holding a magazine in your hands, flicking through ideas and taking a quiet moment for yourself. That feeling guided the making of this issue.
Why we made this
Growing up, the kitchen table was where everything happened - talking, debating, laughing, sharing. We wanted to bottle that sense of warmth and conversation.
So we followed the objects, places and memories that shape us, from cars in Southall to masala dabbas in Bangladesh, and invited our contributors to expand on the worlds they know best. It’s culture through the lens of home, community and creativity.
