A warm cup for sniffly season.
If you grew up South Asian, you know this one. You had a sniffle or a bad day, and someone handed you a steel tumbler of hot yellow milk and waited until you finished it.
Now it’s our turn. This version is gentler for smaller people, with soft spice, a touch of sweetness and served just warm. Make it for nursery bugs, sofa days and bedtimes that need a little extra comfort.
You only need milk and turmeric. The spices are optional.
Makes 1 small cup · Ready in 5 minutes · For ages 1 and up
Ingredients
- ¾ cup whole milk, or milk of choice
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp maple syrup or jaggery
Optional spices
- A pinch of ground cinnamon, ground cardamom and black pepper (to help the turmeric do its work)
Method
- Add the milk, turmeric and any spices you’re using to the Chai Maker.
- Brew on the lowest heat for around three minutes.
- Pour into a small cup and stir in the sweetener.
- Let it cool until it’s comfortably warm before serving.
A few notes
Keep it warm, not hot. Test it on your wrist the way you would a bottle.
No honey for babies. Children under 12 months shouldn’t have honey. For older kids, honey works in place of the maple syrup or jaggery.
Growing up with it. Once they’re hooked, try Sohini’s Haldi Doodh, the full-spice version with fresh turmeric, ginger and whole spices.
